Job Summary
The Lift Engineer will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, servicing, repair, testing, and modernisation of lift and elevator systems across residential, commercial, and industrial environments.
The role requires strong mechanical, electrical, and electronic fault-finding capabilities to ensure all lift systems operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with UK regulatory and manufacturer requirements.
This is a hands-on technical position with no supervisory or staff management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Install lift and elevator systems, including motors, controllers, guide rails, door systems, safety mechanisms, and associated electrical components.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance on traction and hydraulic lift systems.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults using technical drawings, wiring diagrams, diagnostic tools, and manufacturer specifications.
- Complete repairs and replace defective components to restore lift systems to safe and efficient operation.
- Perform full system inspections and identify faults, defects, safety risks, and areas requiring improvement.
- Conduct functional, operational, and safety testing following installation, servicing, maintenance, or repair work.
- Ensure all work complies with EN81 standards, LOLER requirements, British Standards, and relevant UK lift safety regulations.
- Complete service reports, maintenance records, inspection reports, defect reports, and compliance documentation accurately and on time.
- Prepare and follow risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work.
- Recommend system upgrades, modernisation works, safety improvements, and performance optimisation measures.
- Respond to breakdowns and emergency call-outs where required.
- Liaise with senior engineers, contractors, project managers, clients, and site representatives.
- Maintain tools, diagnostic equipment, and company-issued materials in good working condition.
- Follow all company health and safety policies and site-specific safety procedures.
- Work independently while escalating complex technical issues to the Senior Lift Installation Engineer.
Essential Experience
- Minimum two years’ professional experience in lift installation, lift maintenance, lift servicing, lift repair, or electromechanical field engineering.
- Practical experience working with traction and hydraulic lift systems.
- Experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults.
- Experience completing planned and reactive maintenance activities.
- Experience working within regulated engineering or safety-critical environments.
Essential Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 in Lift Engineering, Lift Installation, Lift Maintenance, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
- Relevant electrical or mechanical engineering certification.
- Health and safety training appropriate to engineering or construction environments.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of lift motors, controllers, safety relays, door systems, guide rails, and safety circuits.
- Ability to diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, circuit diagrams, schematics, and manufacturer manuals.
- Working knowledge of traction and hydraulic lift systems.
- Working knowledge of EN81, LOLER, British Standards, and UK lift compliance frameworks.
- Strong understanding of preventative maintenance and fault-finding procedures.
- Ability to use electrical testing equipment and engineering diagnostic tools.
- Ability to complete technical reports and compliance documentation accurately.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, contractors, project managers, and clients.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
- Additional manufacturer-specific lift training.
- Experience in lift modernisation or refurbishment projects.
- Experience working on passenger lifts, goods lifts, platform lifts, or escalator systems.
- Knowledge of programmable lift controllers and electronic control systems.
- Relevant site safety certification.
- Full UK driving licence or eligibility to obtain one.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
The Lift Engineer must:
- Follow all company and site health and safety procedures.
- Complete or comply with risk assessments and method statements.
- Use personal protective equipment as required.
- Report hazards, defects, incidents, and near misses.
- Ensure lift systems are isolated and secured before maintenance or repair work.
- Maintain safe working practices in lift shafts, motor rooms, plant areas, and construction environments.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with legal, regulatory, and manufacturer requirements.
Reporting Structure
The Lift Engineer reports directly to the Senior Lift Installation Engineer.
This position does not include staff supervision, team management, budget management, or formal decision-making responsibility for other employees.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position.
- Work may be carried out across residential, commercial, and industrial sites.
- The role may involve working in lift shafts, motor rooms, confined areas, plant rooms, and construction environments.
- Travel between client sites may be required.
- Occasional emergency call-outs, overtime, or weekend work may be required depending on operational needs.
- The role involves manual handling, standing, climbing, bending, and working at height.
